Israel Targets Bridge in Southern Lebanon As the offensive against Hezbollah escalates
An Israeli strike on a bridge in southern Lebanon and an apartment in Beirut indicates a significant escalation in the offensive against Hezbollah, resulting in the displacement of thousands.
On Friday, the Israeli military announced that it conducted an air strike on a bridge in southern Lebanon, marking what appears to be the first instance in the ongoing campaign against Hezbollah in which Israel has acknowledged targeting civilian infrastructure.
The Israel Defense Forces announced that it targeted the Zrariyeh bridge, which crosses the Litani River, characterizing it as a crucial passage utilized by Hezbollah militants traveling between northern and southern Lebanon.
The military reported that Hezbollah fighters had set up rocket launchers close to the bridge and had conducted attacks on Israel from the nearby region.
“The bridge functioned as a crucial pathway for Hezbollah operatives moving weapons and executing attacks on Israeli territory,” stated the Israeli military, emphasizing that the strike was essential to neutralize a threat to Israeli civilians.
Nonetheless, the military failed to present any evidence to support its assertion that Hezbollah militants were utilizing the bridge.
On Friday, Lebanon’s state media reported that a drone strike targeted a residential apartment in the Burj Hammoud district, situated on the northern outskirts of the Lebanese capital, Beirut. The assault represented the initial instance of the region being struck since the recent surge in hostilities commenced.
The strikes occur as Israeli forces have conducted near-daily attacks throughout Lebanon this week, forming part of a wider offensive against the Iran-backed Hezbollah group.
The escalation came after Hezbollah initiated attacks on March 2, which the group claimed were aimed at avenging the death of Ali Khamenei at the beginning of the current U.S.-Israeli War on Iran.
The escalating cross-border violence has led to a humanitarian crisis in Lebanon, with reports suggesting that hundreds of thousands of civilians have been displaced due to the ongoing airstrikes.
