Brazil is set to revoke the visa of Trump adviser Beattie, according to a source

The government of Brazil is set to revoke the visa of Darren Beattie, who was recently appointed by U.S. President Donald Trump to a senior advisory position focused on monitoring the South American nation, according to a source familiar with the situation, as reported by Reuters on Friday.

Earlier in the day, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva indicated that Beattie would be prohibited from entering Brazil until the U.S. restored a visa for his Health Minister Alexandre Padilha, which had been revoked last year.

Beattie, a critic of Brazil’s government, was appointed last month to shape U.S. policy toward the country, indicating that relations between the two nations remain delicate despite recent rapprochement.

Attorneys representing imprisoned former President Jair Bolsonaro requested that the Brazilian Supreme Court permit Beattie to visit him in jail next week, coinciding with his planned trip to Brazil. However, Justice Alexandre de Moraes rejected the request on Thursday.

Moraes highlighted that, according to a document from Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, the U.S. official has only agreed to participate in a critical minerals forum and engage in meetings with the government during their time in Brazil.

Bolsonaro, who held the presidency from 2019 to 2022, was a close ally of Trump during their time in office. He is presently serving a 27-year prison sentence for conspiring to overthrow Lula, his successor.

“That American guy who claimed he was coming here to visit Jair Bolsonaro was barred from visiting, and I prohibited him from coming to Brazil until they grant the visa for my health minister,” Lula stated at an event on Friday.
