Michael Eric Dyson publicly apologizes to Jay-Z for the leaked private conversation

Author Reflects on Kanye West Misstep While Discussing “Not Like Us” and Trump Parallels

Michael Eric Dyson is pausing to admit his mistake after violating a long-held principle of confidentiality concerning one of hip-hop’s most well-known figures.

This week, the esteemed author and professor made a public apology to Jay-Z on Instagram after disclosing details of a private conversation about the intense feud between Kendrick Lamar and Drake. Dyson had earlier likened Kendrick’s “Not Like Us” to the political persona of Donald Trump, a perspective that Hov is said to have disagreed with.

As he prepared to attend the funeral of the late Reverend Jesse Jackson, Dyson contemplated his previous error, drawing connections to an earlier encounter with Ye. “I recall a time when Kanye [West] shared a text conversation between us publicly,” Dyson remarked. “It was confidential.” I felt pain from that. I’m reflecting on that since I’ve done something similar to Jay-Z. No, I did not share a text publicly. However, I mentioned a private conversation that ought to have stayed between us, just as it has for the past two decades or so.

Dyson shared that he and the Roc Nation mogul typically communicate through texts regarding The Godfather and global politics, but their latest discussions focused on the Kendrick-Drake saga.

Dyson noted that Jay-Z’s main concern was the juxtaposition of a rapper with a politician. The mogul argued that one should not confuse the influence and purpose of lyrics with political discourse. Dyson remarked, “He said this is what rappers do,” highlighting Jay-Z’s mention of his iconic clash with Nas as an illustration of the dynamics of the industry.

The author acknowledged that he might have exaggerated the disagreement in his first account. “I misrepresented him,” Dyson acknowledged. “He said it isn’t that serious.” He wasn’t strongly opposing my views… I would like to extend my apologies to him. The reason I clarified my position initially was that he highlighted the distinction between Trump and Kendrick, which I wanted to ensure was understood and that I did not intend to convey otherwise.

Dyson concluded his message with a solemn and respectful tone, honoring both his friend and the late civil rights leader. “May you all have a blessed morning.” May Reverend Jesse Jackson find eternal peace. I extend my deepest apologies, Jay-Z. I am sending you all my love, dear brother.
