Mathew Knowles Responds to Viral “Shade”: “I Was Seeking Clarity, Not Disrespecting Tina”
Music executive takes back control of the story after a “misleading” Destiny’s Child interview clip.
Mathew Knowles has addressed the controversy following a leaked interview segment that ignited discussions on social media, where numerous individuals have accused him of minimizing the legacy of his ex-wife, Tina Knowles.
The controversy arises from an appearance on PIX11’s Kandid with Kendis, where a discussion regarding the origins of Destiny’s Child took an uncomfortable turn. When host Kendis Gibson remarked that both Mathew and Tina “earned their flowers” for the group’s success, Knowles responded with a question that quickly gained traction: “What work did she put in?”
Although the internet swiftly categorized the comment as “shade,” Knowles maintains that the public is mistaken. In a subsequent conversation with Page Six, the music mogul clarified that his comments were intended as a request for details, rather than a rejection of Tina’s influence. “I wasn’t sure what he meant by that,” Knowles remarked, alluding to the extensive commendation Gibson provided. “I inquired in a composed manner, ‘What effort did she contribute?’ That was indeed a question. Knowles contended that by seeking clarity, he was effectively illuminating Tina’s significant impact on the group’s image.
“If someone simply states that she did hair, and I mention that she also took care of styling, isn’t that a way of appreciating her?” Knowles concluded. He asserted that he has consistently supported Tina’s creative vision, which notably involved designing the group’s early-stage costumes and managing their distinctive styling. “I’ve never said anything negative about Tina,” he stated, asserting that the media frequently attempts to “bait” the former couple into a conflict that isn’t real.
This follows Knowles’ sudden departure from the interview when Gibson proposed that the group was a “joint effort.” Knowles claimed that the exit was prompted by the session beginning on a negative note, as the host arrived late and directed the discussion towards his personal life instead of focusing on the actual project, which was a Destiny’s Child tribute concert. “The way it begins is the way it concludes,” he noted.
Even after their divorce in 2011, he emphasized that his respect for the mother of his children is of utmost importance. “She is my ex-wife,” he clarified. “I show her that respect.” Knowles has also disclosed that he is presently “evaluating all legal remedies” concerning the leaked footage and its representation of the conversation.
