LeBron James Breaks NBA Field Goals Record, Surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

LeBron James has overtaken Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the highest number of field goals in NBA history, marking yet another significant achievement in his career.

LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers has achieved yet another remarkable milestone in his distinguished career, eclipsing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the highest number of field goals scored in National Basketball Association history.

James accomplished the feat in the first quarter of the Lakers’ 120–113 loss to the Denver Nuggets on Thursday. The 41-year-old achieved 16 points in the game, surpassing Abdul-Jabbar’s enduring record of 15,837 field goals.

James, currently in his extraordinary 23rd NBA season, has further enhanced his already impressive career with this milestone. In February 2023, he surpassed Abdul-Jabbar to become the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, and last year he made history as the first player to exceed 50,000 combined points in the regular season and playoffs. He currently holds a total of 43,127 points in regular-season play alone.

Reflecting on his achievement, James expressed that the recognition of basketball legends is a profoundly humbling experience.

“It has always been humbling to be mentioned alongside some of the greatest to ever play this game,” he said. “I spent my childhood watching, reading about, and admiring many of the legends.” If I had the opportunity to be part of the NBA, I would strive to place myself in a position where I could be recognized alongside them by doing things the right way. It’s an impressive achievement, but I find it challenging to fully grasp or visualize it.

Lakers head coach JJ Redick drew a parallel between the enduring nature and reliability of James’ career and that of the iconic musician Bruce Springsteen.

“You reach the conclusion and think, ‘This guy’s greatest hits are remarkable,'” Redick remarked. “LeBron’s remarkable achievements—he continues to build on them.” He keeps playing and playing, and with those greatest hits, he has an impressive catalogue.

Although Abdul-Jabbar established his scoring records prior to the advent of the three-point shot during his career, the six-time NBA champion concluded his 20-year tenure with the Lakers in 1989, having successfully converted 55.9 percent of his 28,307 shot attempts. James currently maintains a shooting rate of 51.6 percent.

The four-time NBA champion is on the verge of achieving yet another remarkable milestone. Thursday’s game was his 1,606th regular-season appearance, putting him just five games shy of Robert Parish for yet another league record.

James, having achieved his 22nd All-Star selection this year, has not yet made a decision regarding his return for another season.

In a historic moment, the Lakers were defeated by the Nuggets, as Nikola Jokić and Jamal Murray both contributed 28 points, enabling Denver to hold onto fifth place in the Western Conference standings, just ahead of the Lakers.

In other league news, the San Antonio Spurs achieved their 13th win in 14 games as Victor Wembanyama showcased an impressive performance, scoring 38 points and grabbing 16 rebounds in a 121–106 home victory against the Detroit Pistons, who are currently at the top of the Eastern Conference.
