Indonesia Issues Strong Warning To Meta Regarding Online Gambling And Disinformation
Indonesia has delivered a strong admonition to Meta for not adequately addressing the proliferation of online gambling and misinformation.
Indonesia’s Communications Ministry has delivered a serious warning to Meta Platforms for not sufficiently addressing the proliferation of online gambling and misinformation on its platforms.
A warning was issued after an unannounced visit on Wednesday by Communications and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid to Meta’s operational office in Jakarta. The ministry stated that the visit was initiated due to worries regarding what it characterized as the company’s insufficient adherence to Indonesia’s content regulations.
Officials reported that Meta responded to merely 28.47 percent of the flagged content associated with online gambling and misinformation. The ministry expressed concerns regarding the proliferation of defamation and hate speech on platforms owned by Meta, such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
“Disinformation, defamation, and hate content pose a significant risk to lives in Indonesia, yet Meta has permitted their continuation,” Meutya stated.
The ministry called on the technology giant to enhance its content moderation systems and expedite the removal of illegal and harmful material. It emphasized that digital platforms functioning in Indonesia are required to adhere completely to national regulations designed to safeguard users from harmful content.
Meta has not yet provided a response to the requests for comment.
The progression comes in response to prior measures taken by the Indonesian government. Last year, the ministry called upon representatives of Meta and other social media companies, instructing them to enhance their moderation efforts in response to increasing worries regarding the dissemination of disinformation online.
The recent warning indicates Jakarta’s growing demand for global technology companies to assume more accountability for the content disseminated on their platforms.
