An ex-Mayor from Louisiana, found guilty of having sex with a teenager at a pool party, says he has no regrets and plans to appeal
A former mayor of Louisiana, found guilty of sex offenses involving a minor, is contesting the decision and preparing to go to court.
On Tuesday, Misty Roberts, the former mayor of DeRidder, Louisiana, was convicted of two felonies: indecent behavior with a minor and carnal knowledge of a minor. When the 43-year-old appears in court for sentencing on April 17, she could potentially receive a term of up to 17 years in jail.
Roberts’ lawyer said she intends to file an appeal because she vehemently disagrees with the jury’s verdict.
Defense lawyer Todd Clemons told TMZ, “Misty is very, very disappointed” in the verdict. ” At this particular point, there’s no apology that I’m going to give on her behalf,” Clemons continued, adding that Roberts respects the jury but plans to appeal the conviction.
Roberts continues to insist on her innocence and expects to avoid going to jail when she is sentenced, according to Clemons.
Regarding her sentencing in April… They will make every effort to persuade the judge not to imprison Misty since she insists she is innocent, according to Clemons.
During the trial, prosecutors contended that the incident took place at Roberts’ house during a pool party. According to testimony given in court, Roberts’ son and the alleged victim’s friend claimed to have witnessed Roberts and the teenager engaging in intoxicated intercourse inside the home.
After hearing the testimony and considering the evidence that was presented during the trial, the jury found Roberts guilty on both felony counts.
Roberts was previously the mayor of the small western Louisiana city of DeRidder. During sentencing, her defense team will contend that jail time is not required.
Roberts was “an excellent mayor and is an excellent mother,” according to Clemons, who also stated that the defense plans to bring up those points with the judge at the next sentencing session.
