Mexican official has announced that the World Diving Cup will be rescheduled following its cancellation

Rommel Pacheco, Mexico’s sports chief, announced on Saturday that the World Diving Cup event in Zapopan, Jalisco, which was previously cancelled due to security concerns, will be rescheduled.

In a statement, the former diver and head of Mexico’s National Sports Commission (CONADE) announced that the competition “is no longer cancelled and is entering a rescheduling phase,” with a new date to be confirmed. “We acknowledge the support and coordination with World Aquatics,” Pacheco expressed on Instagram, also extending gratitude to Mexican sports and diplomatic authorities. “Our dedication to supporting sport continues unwaveringly.”

On Thursday, World Aquatics announced the cancellation of the Zapopan stop, which was set for March 5-8. This decision was made due to travel restrictions imposed by international embassies in response to a rise in violence following the capture and death of cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera, known as “El Mencho.”

World Aquatics has yet to respond to a request for confirmation.

The recent outbreak of unrest has heightened wider concerns regarding Mexico’s capacity to host international sporting events.

On Tuesday, President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that security measures would be reassessed and assured that there was “no risk” for fans traveling to the country for the World Cup this summer.

World Aquatics announced on Thursday that qualification for the Diving World Cup Super Final in Beijing in May will be determined by the results from a stop in Montreal.
