Wiz Khalifa attempted to contest the sentence, but the Romanian court rejected his plea — prison time remains a possibility
Wiz Khalifa has faced a setback in Romania as an appellate court has confirmed a nine-month prison sentence related to a cannabis possession case linked to a 2024 music festival appearance.
The Constanța Court of Appeal issued a ruling that deemed the artist’s request to overturn a December decision, which found him guilty of possessing dangerous drugs for personal use, inadmissible. The judges also rejected his motion to suspend the sentence, deeming it unfounded.
The situation arises from an appearance at the Beach, Please! Festival in Constanța County in July 2024. Authorities claimed that the Grammy-nominated rapper, known as Cameron Thomaz, smoked cannabis while performing. Prosecutors subsequently indicated that law enforcement found over 18 grams of cannabis in his possession.
In April 2024, a lower court imposed a fine of 3,600 lei, roughly $830, on Wiz for illegal possession. Prosecutors contested that sanction, asserting it was inadequate. In December, the trial court substituted the fine with a nine-month custodial sentence.
In Romania, the law prohibits the possession of cannabis, even for personal use, and establishes penalties that can vary from three months to two years of imprisonment or a criminal fine.
In the aftermath of the incident, Wiz took to social media to address the situation. “I did not intend any disrespect towards the country of Romania by performing on stage,” he wrote. “They showed great respect and allowed me to leave.” He mentioned that he planned to go back to Romania “but without a partner next time.”
The question of whether Romanian authorities will pursue extradition remains uncertain.
