Tip-off from a romantic affair resulted in the death of Mexican cartel boss ‘El Mencho’

A piece of information from a trusted associate of El Mencho’s romantic partner directed Mexican forces to his location, sparking a lethal nationwide crackdown.

Authorities in Mexico report that information regarding Nemesio Oseguera’s romantic relationships guided security forces to his hideout in Tapalpa, Jalisco, resulting in his death during a significant military operation that sparked violent outbreaks nationwide.

A trusted associate of one of Oseguera’s partners informed authorities of his whereabouts, enabling special forces to quickly strategize a raid on a forested compound located outside the town. During the operation, gunmen opened fire, leading to intense clashes that subsequently spread across the nation.

Oseguera, commonly referred to as “El Mencho,” sustained injuries along with two bodyguards and was airlifted to Mexico City; however, all three succumbed to their injuries during the journey, as reported by Defense Minister Ricardo Trevilla.

At least 62 individuals lost their lives in the raid and the ensuing unrest, comprising 25 members of the National Guard and 34 suspected gang members.

In response, cartel loyalists ignited vehicles and established 85 roadblocks spanning over a dozen states.

President Claudia Sheinbaum stated on Monday that authorities had regained control, although security measures were intensified in Jalisco, the stronghold of the influential Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Approximately 2,000 extra troops were sent to stabilize the region.

The United States offered a reward of $15 million for information that would lead to Oseguera’s capture. Although US intelligence is said to have assisted in identifying the compound, Mexican officials highlighted that the operation was primarily conducted by domestic forces.

Authorities reported that Oseguera’s right-hand man, referred to as “El Tuli,” orchestrated retaliatory attacks but was also killed in a separate confrontation with security forces.

The flare-up interrupted travel and commerce, as airlines canceled flights and businesses experienced numerous incidents.

Tourism hubs like Puerto Vallarta experienced disruption as burned vehicles obstructed roadways.

Security officials are currently keeping a vigilant eye on possible restructuring within the cartel, cautioning that although Oseguera’s death represents a significant setback for the CJNG, it may also trigger additional instability in a nation that has long suffered from violence related to organized crime.
