Former UK ambassador Mandelson taken into custody following Epstein disclosures
Peter Mandelson, the former British ambassador to the U.S., was taken into custody by London police on Monday on allegations of misconduct in public office, in light of disclosures regarding his connections to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Mandelson, 72, was dismissed from the highest position in Britain’s diplomatic service in September, as the extent of his friendship with Epstein began to emerge.
Earlier this month, police initiated a criminal investigation into Mandelson following the transmission of communications between the former ambassador and Epstein by the government of Prime Minister Keir Starmer. London’s Metropolitan Police stated that “officers have arrested a 72-year-old man on suspicion of misconduct in public office” in connection with the inquiry into a former government minister.
Mandelson was captured on film as he departed from his central London residence, flanked by plainclothes officers equipped with body cameras, before being driven away in a vehicle.
The arrest indicates that law enforcement believes a crime may have occurred, but it does not suggest any wrongdoing on the part of the individual involved.
Mandelson’s lawyers did not provide an immediate response.
Emails revealed a closer relationship between Mandelson and Epstein than previously believed.
Emails exchanged between Mandelson and Epstein, made public by the U.S. Department of Justice in late January, revealed a more intimate relationship than previously understood. Mandelson provided information to the financier during his tenure as a minister in former Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s government in 2009.
Mandelson, who recently stepped down from Starmer’s Labour Party and left his role in the upper chamber of parliament, has expressed that he “very deeply” regrets his connection with Epstein. However, he has not made any public comments or replied to messages requesting his thoughts on the recent revelations.
Police searched Mandelson’s residences in London and western England earlier this month. “He was arrested at an address in Camden on Monday, 23 February, and has been taken to a London police station for questioning,” the police statement indicated. ” This arrest follows search warrants executed at two locations in the Wiltshire and Camden regions.”
Last week, King Charles’ younger brother, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office due to separate allegations regarding his transmission of confidential government documents to Epstein. He has consistently refuted any allegations of misconduct.
INCREASING PRESSURE ON STARMER REGARDING VETTING PRIOR TO APPOINTMENT
A conviction for misconduct in a public office can result in a maximum sentence of life imprisonment and is addressed in a Crown Court, which exclusively handles the most serious criminal offenses.
Mandelson’s connection to Epstein, who passed away in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, lies at the heart of a British political scandal that has led to the resignation of two high-ranking government officials.
Starmer, under pressure to resign due to Mandelson’s appointment, is now subject to additional scrutiny following parliament’s directive to release documents concerning his vetting. A minister announced on Monday that the initial documents are expected to be released in early March.
Mandelson had a lengthy career in UK politics spanning several decades.
Mandelson has experienced a tumultuous, lengthy career in British politics.
He rose to prominence in the mid-to-late 1990s as one of the key figures behind former British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s New Labour initiative.
Mandelson was compelled to resign from the cabinet on two occasions: first in 1998 for not disclosing a home loan obtained from a colleague, and second in 2001 following allegations of attempting to influence a passport application.
He was reappointed as a minister in Brown’s Labour government from 2008 to 2010 and later returned to public office when Starmer appointed him ambassador to the United States in late 2024.
His appointment as ambassador to the United States was first regarded as a clever decision. He achieved an early success by securing Britain’s position as the first nation to finalize an agreement with the United States to reduce certain tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.
However, he was dismissed a few months later when evidence revealed his close connections to Epstein.
Starmer has asserted that Mandelson was untruthful regarding the depth of his connections to Epstein during the vetting process.
