Gabon Halts Access to Social Media Platforms Indefinitely in the Face of Growing Unrest

Gabon has announced the suspension of social media “until further notice,” attributing the decision to the presence of hateful content amid the ongoing protests.

The media regulator in Gabon announced on Tuesday that social media platforms have been suspended “until further notice,” citing concerns regarding online content that it claims is contributing to division and instability.

A representative from the High Authority for Communication stated that the “defamatory, hateful and insulting content” spreading online is fueling discord within society. He stated that the “spread of false information,” “cyberbullying,” and the “unauthorised disclosure of personal data” are undermining government institutions and jeopardising democratic advancement.

The regulator did not indicate which social media platforms would be impacted by the suspension. It underscored that “freedom of expression, including freedom of comment and criticism,” is “a fundamental right enshrined in Gabon.”

The decision arises as President Brice Oligui Nguema faces his initial significant wave of social unrest since taking office last year.

Since December, teachers have been on strike due to issues related to pay and working conditions, prompting demonstrations that have extended to other public sector workers, including individuals in health, higher education, and broadcasting.

The suspension indicates increasing tensions between authorities and parts of the public, as the government attempts to manage unrest while upholding constitutional rights to free expression.
