Jesse Jackson, Pioneering US Civil Rights Leader, Passes Away at 84
Jesse Jackson has passed away at the age of 84, leaving a profound legacy in civil rights advocacy, justice, equality, and a significant global impact.
Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson Sr., a prominent US civil rights leader and founder of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, has passed away peacefully at the age of 84, with his family by his side.
His family expressed, “Our father exemplified servant leadership not only within our family but also for the oppressed, the voiceless, and the overlooked across the globe.” We introduced him to the world, and in turn, the world became a part of our extended family. His steadfast conviction in justice, equality, and love inspired countless individuals, and we urge you to commemorate his legacy by persisting in the struggle for the principles he embodied.
Jackson gained recognition in the 1960s alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., advocating for civil rights and equality. He made two attempts to secure the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination in 1984 and 1988, leveraging his campaigns to encourage millions to register to vote.
Even after receiving a Parkinson’s disease diagnosis in 2017, Jackson persisted in his advocacy efforts. He encountered a “physical challenge” yet stayed dedicated to promoting justice. In November 2025, he was admitted to the hospital for observation following a diagnosis of a degenerative condition called progressive supranuclear palsy.
Jackson’s steadfast commitment forged a worldwide movement for freedom and dignity. His advocacy spanned from grassroots organizing to national campaigns, empowering the voiceless and inspiring generations across the globe.
He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline; children Santita, Jesse Jr., Jonathan, Yusef, Jacqueline, and Ashley Jackson; along with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Burns Jackson; his father, Noah Louis Robinson; and his stepfather, Charles Henry Jackson.
In Chicago, public observances and celebrations of life events are set to take place, with further details to be provided by the Rainbow PUSH Coalition.
