Giannis Antetokounmpo expresses his dedication to the Milwaukee Bucks
Giannis Antetokounmpo remains dedicated to the Milwaukee Bucks. At this moment.
“As of today, I am dedicated to the Milwaukee Bucks,” Antetokounmpo shared with ESPN in an interview that was broadcast on Sunday. “I am devoted to the individuals I collaborate with, my teammates, the coaching staff, Coach Doc (Rivers), and (general manager) Jon (Horst) in the front office.” From the start of this year, I have consistently expressed that you will never hear me say I don’t want to be a Milwaukee Buck, both in my words and in my demeanor.
Although Antetokounmpo has never explicitly stated his desire to leave Milwaukee, he has suggested it through subtle hints.
The Greek Freak shared with The Athletic last month that he would never request a trade from the Bucks, using a vivid analogy to convey that his sentiments about his basketball home might evolve. “So just because I like my eggs scrambled today, I don’t have the opportunity to eat my eggs sunny-side up tomorrow?” he remarked. We are human, aren’t we? It’s essentially the same concept in basketball.
According to ESPN, prior to the Feb. 5 trade deadline, Antetokounmpo had been prepared to play his home games outside of Wisconsin for several months, and the Bucks had entertained offers for one of the top players of his generation. According to a report from ESPN on Sunday, both sides are anticipated to reassess a potential trade during the offseason.
In his latest interview, Antetokounmpo reaffirmed his dedication to the Bucks, yet he candidly reflected on past aspirations of joining other teams. “Growing up, you dream, ‘Oh, what if I played for the Knicks, Madison Square Garden?” What would it be like if I were drafted by the Lakers and became teammates with Kobe? What if I join the Cavs and LeBron throws me the ball?’ Antetokounmpo stated.
He also acknowledged his curiosity about how he would integrate with recent NBA champions such as the Boston Celtics and the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Antetokounmpo’s wandering eye has consistently appeared to be driven by a desire for victory. The Bucks brought Jrue Holiday on board in November 2020 following a series of disappointing postseason failures that raised worries about Antetokounmpo potentially departing Milwaukee rather than committing to a supermax deal.
Milwaukee subsequently traded Holiday for Damian Lillard two years after securing a championship, in response to Antetokounmpo’s statement that he would not sign an extension until he was assured of the team’s commitment to winning another title.
With the Bucks far removed from their glory days, currently holding a record of 23-30 and positioned 12th in the Eastern Conference, Antetokounmpo is once more yearning for that winning sensation. He drew another food analogy to ESPN, comparing the absence of a title since 2021 to the desire for another bite of a delicious steak. “You want that steak again,” Antetokounmpo remarked.
Nonetheless, he ensured that the city of Milwaukee received a bit more reassurance. “This is my team, and I love it,” he expressed.
