Shaq Discusses Rebuilding His Relationship With His Children Following Divorce
The NBA legend reveals that his children did not communicate with him for an extended period after his separation from Shaunie Henderson.
Shaq is candid about the repercussions of his previous errors and the challenging journey to reconcile with his family.
In a recent conversation with T.I. on the expediTIously podcast, the NBA legend shared insights about his marriage and the valuable lessons he gained regarding loyalty. Shaq was candid about his actions during his marriage to Shaunie Henderson, acknowledging that he fell short. “I realized that I understand better—no better than to be out here wasting time,” Shaq confessed. “You and I are not weak individuals.” At times, one can become entangled, yet we possess greater awareness.
The aftermath of the divorce not only impacted his connection with Shaunie but also led to a significant divide between him and his seven children. Shaq disclosed that the atmosphere was so charged that communication entirely ceased for a while. “In all that, I’m just grateful and fortunate that they have forgiven me,” Shaq said. “Because my children and I hadn’t spoken for some time, and I recognized that.” However, we are beginning to draw nearer, and I am guiding my sons to surpass my own achievements. Papa was a wandering spirit; you don’t have to follow my path.
He took a moment to express his love for the mothers of his children, conveying heartfelt gratitude for their grace during his journey. “A heartfelt acknowledgment to the mothers of my children.” They are stunning black women, and I cherish them for their forgiveness. I appreciate them for their understanding and for not resorting to violence—after all, she could have shot you,” he joked before turning serious about his obligations. “I value them more than they realize.” If we bring a child into this world, my role is to safeguard, support, and cherish. “Even if we aren’t officially married, I will always look after you.”
The journey to peace has not come easily for the O’Neal crew. Shareef O’Neal has expressed his admiration for how his parents ultimately learned to coexist harmoniously. He had earlier expressed the challenges they faced in their younger days, but now he appreciates that Shaq can greet Shaunie’s new husband, Pastor Keion Henderson, without any tension.
While Shaunie’s 2024 memoir suggested that her relationship with Shaq revolved more around the concept of marriage than the individual, the family has now arrived at a point where everyone is progressing. Shaq is already contemplating his future, stating that he’ll be prepared to say “I do” once more in approximately three years.
