During his address on Thursday, Ramaphosa stated that criminal syndicates currently represent the most pressing threat to South Africa’s democracy, social cohesion, and economic progress.

“Organised crime poses the most pressing danger to our democracy, our society, and our economic growth,” he stated. “This year, we are dedicated to intensifying our efforts against organized crime and criminal syndicates.”

The president emphasized that the government would implement a more stringent approach to law enforcement, committing to a zero tolerance policy for criminality and corruption.

“We cannot combat organized criminals by being overly cautious.” “We must act decisively and apply the full weight of the law,” Ramaphosa stated. “I want to make this message unmistakably clear: there will be no tolerance for acts of criminality and corruption.”

The choice to send in the military arises in the context of ongoing elevated rates of violent crime throughout the nation. South Africa experiences an average of approximately 60 murders daily, ranking among the highest homicide rates globally.

A significant number of the killings are associated with turf wars among drug gangs and violent conflicts related to illegal mining activities, which have increasingly emerged as flashpoints for lethal confrontations.

Alongside the military deployment, Ramaphosa revealed intentions to enhance law enforcement capabilities by bringing in around 5,500 new police officers.
