Nigeria Achieves Permanent Position on African Central Bank Board at AU Summit
Nigeria has obtained a permanent seat on the board of the African Central Bank, strengthening its role in economic integration, peace, and democratic governance.
Nigeria has achieved a notable diplomatic milestone following the 39th Session of the Executive Council of the African Union (AU), obtaining a permanent seat on the Board of the African Central Bank.
The announcement made by Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs, highlights Nigeria’s increasing role in shaping the financial landscape of Africa.
“The Council’s decision to award Nigeria a permanent seat on the Board of the African Central Bank marks a significant milestone,” Ambassador Tuggar stated.
“This decision further enhances Nigeria’s representation on the Board of the Technical Convergence Committee of the African Monetary Institute, which acts as a precursor to the establishment of the African Central Bank.”
He noted that the achievement showcases Nigeria’s technical capacity, economic importance, and dedication to promoting Africa’s monetary integration agenda.
The summit underscored Nigeria’s role in advancing peace, security, and democratic governance throughout the continent, extending beyond financial discussions. The session resulted in the successful election of candidates supported by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to the Peace and Security Council.
“This outcome highlights the robust cohesion, collaboration, and solidarity among ECOWAS Member States, along with the region’s collective dedication to fostering stability and security throughout the continent,” Ambassador Tuggar remarked.
Nigeria took the initiative in organizing a Ministerial High-Level Panel Discussion focused on Regional Partnerships for Democracy. The event drew ministers, high-ranking government officials, and representatives from various African nations and the global community.
Ambassador Tuggar stated that the panel “facilitated constructive dialogue on strengthening democratic institutions, fostering inclusive governance, and enhancing collaborative regional approaches to sustaining democratic values.”
“The discussions and results from the 39th Executive Session highlight Nigeria’s dedication to the principles and goals of the African Union, especially in advancing economic integration, institutional growth, peace, security, and democratic governance throughout the continent,” he stated.
Ambassador Tuggar concluded by highlighting the Federal Government’s dedication to collaborating with AU Member States and regional bodies. “Nigeria is committed to promoting Africa’s collective prosperity and sustainable development,” he stated.
