Thomas Tuchel Signs Contract Extension with England Through 2028
Thomas Tuchel has secured a new contract with England, ensuring his leadership until 2028.
England has announced that the manager of the men’s national team, Thomas Tuchel, has signed a new contract that will keep him in his role until 2028. This period coincides with England co-hosting the European Championship with Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
Tuchel, who assumed his role in January 2025, led the Three Lions through an impeccable World Cup qualification campaign. England finished at the top of Group K, achieving 8 victories in 8 matches, netting 22 goals while conceding none, positioning themselves as one of the frontrunners for this year’s tournament.
In a statement, Tuchel expressed his happiness and pride in extending his time with England. I have thoroughly enjoyed every moment of working with my players and coaches, and I eagerly anticipate leading them to the World Cup. This is a remarkable opportunity, and we will strive to make the country proud.
“I have received tremendous support from Mark (Bullingham, CEO), all my colleagues at The FA, and from fans wherever I go, which made it an easy decision for me to continue in this dream job when asked.” EURO 2028 promises to be an extraordinary tournament, and as a coach, there is nothing more desirable than the opportunity to compete against the finest on the grandest stage.
Tuchel’s backroom staff, including Anthony Barry, Henrique Hilario, Nico Mayer, and James Melbourne, have all secured new contracts, prolonging their tenure by two years.
The German’s time in charge has been notably commendable. Following a solid beginning in the qualification for the 2026 World Cup, England demonstrated impressive teamwork, achieving 5-0 victories on the road against Serbia and Latvia. The sole setback occurred during the summer when a rotated squad suffered a 3-1 defeat to AFCON champions Senegal at the City Ground.
FA chief executive Mark Bullingham expressed his pleasure regarding the extension, stating: “I am delighted Thomas has committed to stay with us through to the Euros in 2028.” He was the ideal candidate for the role when he came on board for the World Cup campaign, and he has only enhanced his reputation throughout the qualifiers. The players are clearly supporting him, and the unity within the group is evident to everyone.
“No other candidate in world football compares.” His extensive experience in high-stakes situations, combined with his deep understanding and enthusiasm, provides the team with an excellent opportunity for success this summer and in the upcoming once-in-a-generation EURO to be held on home soil in two years.
“With Thomas, Anthony, and the broader team, we possess an ideal combination of English coaching and global experience.” Their complete attention is directed towards performing at their best this summer, and by securing them early for 2028, we have eliminated the possible distraction of contract renegotiations surrounding the tournament.
Prior to the World Cup in June, England is set to compete against New Zealand and Costa Rica in warm-up matches in Florida. Next month, during the international break, they are set to face Uruguay and Japan in friendly matches.
