Ratcliffe Issues Apology Following Controversial ‘Colonised by Immigrants’ Comments Amid UK Backlash

Sir Jim Ratcliffe apologizes for his choice of words but stands by the necessity for regulated and well-managed immigration to foster economic growth.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has offered an apology after his interview with Sky News economics and data editor Ed Conway, during which he remarked that the UK had been “colonised by immigrants.”

In a statement, the INEOS founder and Manchester United co-owner expressed: “I apologize if my choice of words has upset some individuals in the UK and Europe and raised concerns, but it is crucial to address the topic of controlled and well-managed immigration that fosters economic growth.”

He stated, “My remarks were made in response to inquiries regarding UK policy at the European Industry Summit in Antwerp, where I was addressing the significance of economic growth, employment, skills, and manufacturing in the UK.” I aimed to emphasize that it is essential for governments to handle migration in conjunction with investing in skills, industry, and jobs, ensuring that long-term prosperity is accessible to all. Maintaining an open debate on the challenges facing the UK is essential.

Ratcliffe encountered demands for an apology from Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, Chancellor Rachel Reeves, and Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey. Nonetheless, his remarks garnered backing from certain individuals, including former Tory prime minister Liz Truss.

In the meantime, The Times has reported that the Football Association (FA), the governing body for football in the UK, intends to “look into” the comments made by Sir Jim.
