Michael Jackson Estate has stated that Sexyy Red’s rendition of “Beat It” is completely “unauthorized”
Sexyy Red’s viral “Just Eat It” moment has encountered a significant obstacle following the public intervention of Michael Jackson’s estate.
This week, the controversy gained momentum following the emergence of a studio clip featuring the St. Louis rapper transforming Jackson’s 1982 classic “Beat It” into an explicit remix. The response from the King of Pop’s camp came quickly. In a statement to Billboard on February 12, a representative for the estate remarked, “We were completely unaware of this.” The music is being used without authorization.
That statement clarifies one thing. Clearance is not available.
The viral moment began when Lil Yachty posted footage of Sexyy Red working on the remix on February 10. In the clip, she raps, “Just eat it, just eat it/ You better not nut fast because I hate a minute man/ And if that d**k is trash, I’m telling all my friends/ I’ll beat your a** and we bout to throw them hands.” The post gained rapid traction, particularly following Yachty’s playful suggestion that the track could feature on the forthcoming Michael biopic soundtrack.
Sexyy Red intensified the situation by sharing her own rendition of the clip the following day. “Leaked footage from the Michael Jackson movie HOOCHIE TRIBUTE TO THE BEST LLMJ,” she wrote, embracing the tumult.
“Beat It” first debuted on “Thriller” in 1982 and reached the pinnacle of the Billboard Hot 100. Although Sexyy Red has expressed admiration for Jackson in the past, this remix highlights the distinction between paying tribute to a legend and sampling their work.
