Canadian authorities have identified an 18-year-old woman as the suspect in a mass school shooting

An 18-year-old woman with a background of mental health challenges has been identified as the perpetrator in the tragic deaths of her family and six others, before taking her own life.

Authorities in Canada have identified Jesse Van Rootselaar as the individual responsible for the shooting that resulted in the deaths of eight people and injuries to many others in the remote community of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. The updated death toll of nine encompasses the suspect, who authorities report acted independently before ending her own life as officers approached the scene.

The tragic events unfolded at a private residence, where Van Rootselaar took the lives of her 39-year-old mother and 11-year-old stepbrother. She subsequently went to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, her previous institution, where she discharged a long gun and a modified handgun. The individuals affected were:

A 39-year-old woman who teaches.

Five students, all aged 12 and 13.

More than 25 individuals sustained injuries, with several still in critical condition.

RCMP Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald confirmed that police had visited the suspect’s home multiple times in recent years regarding mental health concerns. Firearms had been confiscated from the residence two years prior, but were subsequently returned after a legal appeal was made.

Although Van Rootselaar’s firearms license expired in 2024, the investigation is currently concentrating on how she obtained the weapons utilized in the massacre. Prime Minister Mark Carney has directed that flags be flown at half-mast nationwide, expressing, “The nation mourns with you.”
