Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada has expressed to the residents of Tumbler Ridge in British Columbia that “the nation mourns with you” following the tragic loss of nine lives in coordinated shootings at a secondary school and a nearby residence.
At least 25 additional individuals sustained injuries in the attacks, which occurred at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School — located approximately 415 miles north of Vancouver — and at a nearby residential property. The police suspect a connection between the two scenes, though they acknowledge that they cannot confirm this with certainty at this time.
Investigators reported that six victims were discovered deceased within the school building, and a seventh succumbed to injuries en route to the hospital. Two additional individuals were found deceased at a nearby residence.
Authorities have confirmed that the suspect was discovered deceased at the school. Authorities have stated that they are aware of the attacker’s identity; however, they have not disclosed the name or gender at this time.
Earlier during the incident, a shelter-in-place alert characterized the suspect as a “female in a dress with brown hair.”
Students and staff, filled with fear, recounted their frantic attempts to ensure their safety as the violence erupted. A student shared an account of how he and his classmates fortified their classroom doors with tables, while a teacher recounted the experience of hiding for hours as the gunfire persisted.
Emergency services acted promptly, ensuring the area was secured and transporting the injured to the hospital. Authorities report that investigations are continuing as the community deals with one of the most lethal attacks in the province’s recent history.
