Breaking: Dangote Refinery Sets a New Record by Becoming the First in the World to Reach 650,000 bpd Capacity

Dangote Refinery achieves a remarkable milestone, poised to deliver up to 75 million litres daily as it reaches its full capacity of 650,000 bpd.

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has achieved a significant milestone, becoming the first refinery globally to reach and maintain a full capacity of 650,000 barrels per day on its Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) and Motor Spirit (MS) Block.

The refinery has announced that both units are now functioning at peak performance after a scheduled maintenance exercise, highlighting what it calls a significant milestone in global refining operations.

Following the maintenance procedure, the refinery initiated a rigorous 72-hour performance test run in partnership with its licensor, UOP, to ensure operational efficiency and verify that all essential parameters align with international standards.

David Bird, Chief Executive Officer, stated that the milestone showcases the robustness of the refinery’s engineering design and operational capabilities.

“Our teams have showcased remarkable precision and expertise in stabilizing both the CDU and MS Block.” This milestone highlights the strength, reliability, and engineering quality that characterize our operations. He stated, “We are dedicated to delivering superior refined products that will reshape Nigeria’s energy landscape.”

Bird confirmed that the CDU and MS Block, which include the naphtha hydrotreater, isomerisation unit, and reformer unit, are now operating steadily at their full nameplate capacity of 650,000 barrels per day.

He mentioned that additional processing units will start their individual performance test runs in Phase 2, which is set to begin next week.

Throughout the recent festive season, the refinery provided a daily supply of between 45 and 50 million litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). The CDU and MS Block have been fully restored and optimized, allowing the facility to efficiently deliver up to 75 million litres of PMS to the domestic market as needed.

The refinery emphasized that this accomplishment bolsters Nigeria’s pursuit of energy self-sufficiency, diminishes reliance on imports, and positions the country as a net exporter of refined petroleum products.
