Trump Cautions That He Might Stop the Opening of the US-Canada Gordie Howe Bridge

Donald Trump has issued a threat to obstruct the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, heightening tensions with Canada regarding compensation and trade disagreements.

President Donald Trump has issued a warning regarding the potential obstruction of a significant bridge linking the United States and Canada, insisting that Washington receive “full compensation” for what he claims the US has provided to its northern counterpart.

In a statement shared on his Truth Social platform, Trump remarked that the Gordie Howe International Bridge, which connects the Canadian province of Ontario to the US state of Michigan, would remain closed unless Canada demonstrated “fairness and respect” towards the United States. He claimed that Ottawa was exploiting the US and stated that negotiations would commence right away, although he did not clarify the method for conducting these discussions.

The bridge that crosses the Detroit River is anticipated to open for traffic in early 2026, subject to final testing and regulatory approvals. Construction commenced in 2018, after over ten years of political disagreements and legal obstacles between the two nations. According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, the estimated cost of the project was 6.4 billion Canadian dollars.

The project’s website states that the bridge received funding from the Canadian government, yet it was intended to be publicly owned by both Canada and the state of Michigan. The project was developed by the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, which was entirely owned by the Canadian government. Trump challenged this arrangement, asserting that Canada essentially controlled both sides of the bridge and contending that the United States ought to possess “at least one half of this asset.”

The legal means by which Trump could obstruct the bridge’s opening were not immediately apparent. The bridge authority, the office of Ontario Premier Doug Ford, and the mayor’s office in Detroit have not yet provided comments in response to requests.

Trump linked his stance to wider trade conflicts, condemning the tariffs that Canada placed on US dairy products. He also criticized a recent trade agreement between Canada and China, cautioning that it would significantly damage Canada’s economy. In comments that garnered significant attention, Trump asserted that China would eradicate ice hockey in Canada and permanently abolish the Stanley Cup.

The Gordie Howe bridge has been a subject of controversy for some time, especially among the owners of the adjacent Ambassador Bridge, a privately owned route connecting Detroit and Canada. In the course of Trump’s initial term, the Moroun family, proprietors of the Ambassador Bridge, pressed him to halt the construction of the new bridge, contending that it jeopardized their sole right to collect tolls.

At that time, Trump and then Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau released a joint statement characterizing the Gordie Howe bridge as a “essential economic link” between the two nations.
