Apple intends to permit external voice-controlled AI chatbots in CarPlay, according to Bloomberg News

Apple is set to enable voice-controlled artificial intelligence applications from other companies in CarPlay, according to a report by Bloomberg News on Friday, which referenced sources familiar with the situation.

The change signifies a strategic pivot for Apple, which has previously permitted only its own Siri assistant as a voice-control alternative. This development allows users to interact with AI chatbots from various companies via CarPlay’s vehicle interface for the first time, as stated in the report.

Apple chose not to provide any comments regarding the report.

AI companies and providers like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Alphabet’s Google are set to launch CarPlay versions of their apps featuring a voice-control mode, according to the report.

Nonetheless, Apple will not permit users to change the Siri button on CarPlay or the wake word used to activate the service. The report indicated that users must open the app to enable the third-party voice control.

According to the report, the iPhone maker is set to enhance support for apps in CarPlay within the next month, enabling developers to create their apps to automatically initiate voice mode upon opening.
