UK has imposed sanctions on leaders of the Sudanese army and paramilitary groups in response to the ongoing conflict

British government announced on Thursday that it has imposed sanctions on six individuals believed to be involved in committing atrocities during the war in Sudan or contributing to the conflict by supplying mercenaries and military equipment.

The government stated that the measures were aimed at senior commanders within both the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces.

The clash between the two factions has uprooted millions, engaged regional powers, and triggered a significant humanitarian crisis since its onset in April 2023.

“We urgently require a ceasefire and safe access for humanitarian relief agencies to reach all individuals in need,” stated British foreign minister Yvette Cooper, who visited the Sudan-Chad border this week. “Through these sanctions, we aim to dismantle the war machine of those who perpetrate or profit from the brutal violence in Sudan,” Cooper further emphasized.

The British government has also sanctioned three individuals: Alvaro Andres Quijano, Mateo Andres Duque Botero, and Claudia Viviana Oliveros Forero. They are suspected of recruiting foreign fighters for the conflict or facilitating the purchase of military equipment.

Those who have been sanctioned also comprise Abu Aqla Mohamed Kaikal, a former RSF Commander and the current leader of the Sudan Shield Forces, RSF Field Commander Hussein Barsham, and RSF Financial Advisor Mustafa Ibrahim Abdel Nabi Mohamed.
