Halle Berry expresses that her groundbreaking Oscar victory did not alter her journey in Hollywood, stating, “I was still Black that next morning”
Over twenty years since her groundbreaking Oscar evening, Halle Berry reflects that the achievement did not catalyze the industry transformation many anticipated.
In 2002, Berry received the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in “Monster’s Ball,” marking a historic moment as the first Black woman to achieve this recognition. In a recent interview with The Cut, the 59-year-old actress expressed that the moment did not alter her career trajectory as she had envisioned.
“That Oscar didn’t really alter the trajectory of my career,” Berry stated.
She clarified that although the victory held significant importance, the industry’s view of her did not change overnight. “After I won it, I imagined there would be a script truck arriving right at my front door.” Although I felt an immense sense of pride, I still identified as Black the following morning,” she added. “Directors continued to express concerns, asking, ‘If we cast a Black woman in this role, how will it impact the overall narrative?’ Is it necessary for me to cast a Black man? Then it’s a film centered around Black culture. “Black films don’t perform well in international markets.”
Berry also mentioned that she has had open conversations with Cynthia Erivo, who has garnered several Oscar nominations. Berry remembered saying to her, “You absolutely deserve it, but I’m not sure it will change your life.” “That can’t serve as the justification for your actions, can it?”
During an appearance on What Now? with Trevor Noah in 2025, Berry reflected on the moment, expressing that she felt destined to open a door. “I realized it was beyond my own understanding,” she remarked. “In that moment, I was meant to be a beacon of possibility.” I believe it fulfilled that purpose.
Berry is still the sole Black woman to have won the Best Actress award. Her next appearance will be in “Crime 101,” set to hit theaters on February 13.
