Olympic and World Cup champion Dunn declares her retirement

Crystal Dunn, an Olympic champion and World Cup winner with 160 appearances for the U.S. women’s national team, announced her retirement from professional soccer on Thursday.

Dunn played a pivotal role in the United States’ victories at the 2019 World Cup and the 2024 Olympics. She lifted the championship trophy in the NWSL three times, achieving this feat with the North Carolina Courage in 2018 and 2019, and with the Portland Thorns in 2022.

A versatile talent who excelled in both midfield and forward positions, she emerged as a vital component of the national team’s defense, impressively performing at left back even though it wasn’t her favored role. “I leave the game with a sense of peace and deep fulfillment for all that I’ve accomplished,” Dunn stated. “I’m grateful for the incredible people I’ve had the privilege to work with, from teammates and coaches to family and friends, and all the amazing moments we’ve shared.” I eagerly anticipate the next chapter that lies ahead.

Dunn marks the most recent addition to a lineup of prominent athletes from the United States’ contemporary golden era who have chosen to retire. She competed alongside prominent figures such as Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan, establishing herself as a cornerstone of the U.S. defense.

Dunn emerged as one of the pioneering Black stars in a predominantly white U.S. women’s soccer program, becoming a role model for future generations.

“I first kicked a soccer ball at the age of four, unaware that it would transform my life,” said Dunn. “My journey had its flaws, yet it was truly beautiful.”
