NAACP Recognizes A$AP Rocky with Vanguard Award for Transforming Streetwear and High Fashion
A$AP Rocky is being acknowledged for his revolutionary impact on style and culture as the NAACP prepares to celebrate Black greatness on one of entertainment’s greatest nights.
The multihyphenate musician, entrepreneur, actor, and fashion icon will be given the Vanguard Award for Fashion during the 57th NAACP Image Awards Fashion Show on February 27, according to the NAACP. As part of a project that received nine nominations total, he is also nominated for three NAACP Image Awards for his performance in “Highest 2 Lowest.”
Organizers said Rocky’s career illustrates how fashion can function as bold narrative, with his influence spanning streetwear, premium design, and creative direction. Ruth E. Carter, Bethann Hardison, and June Ambrose are past recipients of the Vanguard Award.
“A$AP Rocky, this year’s Vanguard Award recipient, personifies the strength and development of Black talent. “He has redefined the intersection of music and fashion, shaping global trends and inspiring new generations as a creative force that consistently pushes culture forward,” stated Karen Boykin-Towns, Vice Chair of the NAACP National Board of Directors. “Giving A$AP Rocky the Vanguard Award honors his enduring impact and the legacy he continues to create.”
“A$AP Rocky represents the fearless evolution of Black creativity,” stated Connie Orlando, Executive Vice President of Specials, Music Programming & Music Strategy at BET. “His influence extends far beyond fashion. On a worldwide scale, he has transformed the intersections of culture, music, art, and individual expression. By giving him the Vanguard Award, the NAACP honors not only his aesthetic but also his leadership, vision, and enduring influence on the next generation of artists.
The 57th NAACP Image Awards will air live on February 28 on BET and CBS.
