Ilhan Omar, a congresswoman, was attacked during a Minnesota town hall with an unknown liquid
Congresswoman IIhan Omar of Minnesota was doused with a liquid during a public meeting as a suspect was detained and charged, but she was uninjured.
During a town hall that Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar was giving on Tuesday, an audience member used a syringe to squirt liquid at her, resulting in an attack with an unidentified substance, according to Minneapolis police.
Despite the event, Omar was unharmed and carried on speaking to the crowd.
“I’m all right. This little agitator won’t stop me from performing my job because I’m a survivor. On X, she later wrote, “I don’t let bullies win.”
According to a BBC reporter who was on the scene, the liquid that was poured on Omar smelled sour, like a chemical substance.
According to the local sheriff’s office, 55-year-old Anthony James Kazmierczak is being kept in custody after being charged with third-degree assault.
Omar, a Democrat, promised the crowd that “we will continue… we are Minnesota strong” following the assault.
“I respected her courage and strength to still stay and finish the town hall for the people,” Alfred Flowers Jr., another attendee, told the BBC.
As they dragged the man out of the room, Omar’s teammates can be seen on camera yelling, “Make a hole.”
The suspect said that Omar was “pitting us against each other” as he was being forced out. Who he was referring to was not immediately apparent.
According to authorities, forensics were done and Kazmierczak was taken into custody at the site.
“Violence and intimidation have no place in Minneapolis,” stated Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey in a social media statement denouncing the incident. We can disagree without endangering others. In our city, such behavior will not be accepted.
In 2019, Omar was elected to the US Congress as one of the first two Muslim American women, the first Somali American, and the first American of African descent.
After the second US citizen was shot dead by immigration police in the state this month, Omar was scheduled to address concerns about the presence of federal immigration agents at a town hall in a basement in north Minneapolis, which drew about 100 people.
Renee Good, a US citizen, was shot dead by an immigration officer in January. After being halted by border officials last week, US citizen Alex Pretti was slain, sparking further demonstrations and public indignation.
Omar demanded that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem “resign or face impeachment” and that Immigration and Customs Enforcement be “abolished” during the town hall. Those comments were followed by the attack.
Omar was persuaded to call off the event by officials, but she refused.
“We will continue our conversation. Give me ten minutes, please. Don’t let them take center stage, please. At the podium, she pleaded, “Please don’t let them have the show.”
Some locals think that President Donald Trump’s criticism of Omar is connected to Minnesota’s enhanced immigration enforcement. In the past, Trump has called her “disgusting” and a “radical left lunatic.”
Omar “should be in jail, or even worse punishment, sent back to Somalia, which is regarded as one of the absolutely worst countries in the world,” Trump said on Truth Social on January 18. She may contribute to making Somalia great once more.
The largest Somali immigrant population in the United States resides in Minnesota.
Following the second deadly shooting in Minnesota, Trump declared on Tuesday that his administration was “going to de-escalate a little bit.”
