King Charles knighted Idris Elba
The 53-year-old actor, whose Elba Hope Foundation promotes youth activism, was named to the monarch’s New Year’s Honours List in recognition of his efforts to combat knife crime.
“I receive this honor on behalf of the many young people whose talent, ambition, and resilience have driven the work of the Elba Hope Foundation,” he declared.
“I hope we can do more to raise awareness of the value of consistent, useful support for youth and our collective duty to assist them in finding a way to avoid violence.”
The 1,157 individuals on the list also include Olympic gold medallists Christopher Dean and Jayne Torvill from the 1984 Winter Games.
They were named a Dame and Sir for their ice skating and volunteer work, which they described as “wonderful and humbling at the same time.”
Matt Lucas of Little Britain is appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), and Paul Elliott of the Chuckle Brothers has been named a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).
Wicked singer Cynthia Erivo received an MBE for her services to music and drama, while actress Meera Syal of The Kumars At No 42 was named a Dame.
OBEs are given to broadcaster Gabby Logan, actor Warwick Davis, and presenter and author Richard Osman.
Davis remarked, “This is the best thing that’s ever happened to me and I’ve been in Star Wars,” while Osman declared that he was “absolutely thrilled.”
Following their summertime heroics at the Euros, a number of England’s Lionesses have made the list.
In addition to Alex Greenwood, Keira Walsh, Georgia Stanway, and Ella Toone becoming MBEs, Captain Leah Williamson has been named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).
Sarina Wiegman, the Dutch manager of the team, has received an honorary damehood.
“I would like to express my sincere gratitude for this honor,” she stated. I had no idea that the English would treat me with such love and respect when I initially came to the country. I sincerely appreciate the fans’ support.
“This year’s Honours list celebrates the very best of Britain – people who put the common good ahead of themselves to strengthen communities and change lives,” stated Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.
“The decent, caring nation we are pleased to be is reflected in their unassuming devotion. Thank you and congrats to everyone honored today on behalf of the entire country.
