China Reaffirms Support for Somalia’s Sovereignty and Denies Recognition to Somaliland
China has expressed its opposition to the international recognition of Somaliland, calling for respect for Somalia’s unity and territorial integrity in light of increasing secessionist tensions.
China has expressed firm opposition to any efforts aimed at dividing Somalia, reiterating its support for the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the East African nation.
During a routine press briefing on Monday, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Lin Jian emphasized that “no country should encourage or support other countries’ internal separatist forces for its own selfish interests.” He called on authorities in Somaliland to put an end to “separatist activities and collusion with external forces.”
Days after Israel became the first country to formally recognize the self-declared Republic of Somaliland as an independent state, it announced plans to immediately collaborate with Somaliland on agriculture, health, technology, and economic initiatives.
China’s stance underscores its ongoing backing for Somalia as international focus intensifies on Somaliland’s quest for independence.
