Trump boasts of slashing over 271,000 federal jobs while the unemployment rate rises to its highest level since 2014

Donald Trump is encountering significant criticism after celebrating the loss of hundreds of thousands of American jobs.

While often portraying himself as a champion of the workers and a defender of the middle class, Trump dedicated his post-Christmas holiday to celebrating the reduction of a significant portion of the federal workforce.

On December 26, Trump posted on Truth Social a screenshot from the White House Rapid Response account, which confirmed that 271,000 government positions have been eliminated, resulting in the lowest staffing levels in more than ten years.

As families of the displaced grapple with uncertainty about their financial futures in 2026, Trump seemed to express delight at the statistics.

He wrote in the caption, “Big news for the USA!” The White House’s messaging team participated in the celebration by sharing the slogan “Promises made, promises kept,” indicating that these cuts were integral to the “America First” agenda.

The timing of this celebration has prompted numerous economists to raise concerns.

The most recent figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate that the national unemployment rate reached 4.6% in November, with 7.8 million individuals currently unemployed. This marks a significant rise from the prior year, when the unemployment rate was 4.2%, reflecting 7.1 million individuals without jobs. Although industries such as healthcare and construction have experienced some expansion, there is a notable trend of federal workforce reductions occurring at an unprecedented rate.

A significant portion of this downsizing was anticipated to be managed by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the prominent initiative spearheaded by Elon Musk. Trump initially asserted that the group would operate until July 2026 in order to establish “less bureaucracy.”

In November, Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor remarked that DOGE “doesn’t exist” and is no longer functioning as a “centralized entity.”

As unemployment figures steadily rise, the “big news” that Trump is celebrating seems increasingly disconnected from the harsh reality faced by millions of Americans now without a paycheck.
