Mouyouma retaliates against Marseille while defending Aubameyang
Gabon’s head coach, Thierry Mouyouma, responded to Olympique de Marseille’s worries by vehemently defending his choice to start Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Mouyouma emphasized that the decision was solely athletic and stressed that the striker was available and fit. “The way Marseille is acting infuriates me. He said that Aubameyang’s physical condition had obviously improved, allowing the Gabonese staff to rely on him during a challenging time for the national team. “They pay the player, and when they use him, they do what they want,” he said.
The Gabon coach then expanded the discussion by denouncing what he perceived as some European clubs’ disrespect for the African competition. “Gabon alone decides how to use its players, whether they play for Marseille or any other club,” he said in closing, calling AFCON “the third most important competition in the world” and demanding an end to what he sees as ongoing neglect.
