The African Union declines to recognize Somaliland and reiterates its commitment to the unity and sovereignty of Somalia

The chairperson of the African Union denounces attempts to recognize Somaliland and emphasizes the need to preserve continental peace and Somalia’s geographical integrity.

H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf (@ymahmoudali), the chairperson of the African Union Commission, has underlined the African Union’s unflinching commitment to Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity and has vehemently rejected any recognition of Somaliland as an independent country. This declaration coincides with increased apprehension over recent events concerning the political situation of Somaliland.

Youssouf unambiguously reiterated the AU’s long-standing and consistent stance based on the values embodied in the African Union’s Constitutive Act while expressing profound worry over the matter. He emphasized the importance of respecting the intangible borders that were left behind after independence, a principle that was first upheld by the Organization of African Unity’s 1964 ruling.

Recalling that Somaliland is still an essential component of the Federal Republic of Somalia, the Chairperson vehemently opposes any effort to acknowledge Somaliland’s independence. He cautioned that efforts to weaken Somalia’s unity and sovereignty are incompatible with the African Union’s core values and run the risk of setting risky precedents that might have a significant impact on peace and stability throughout the continent.

Youssouf also reaffirmed the AU’s unwavering support for the Somali government’s continuous efforts to uphold inclusive governance, fortify state institutions, and consolidate peace—all of which are essential to preserving Somalia’s territorial integrity.

The African Union’s commitment to protecting the continent’s post-colonial frontiers is reflected in this reaffirmation, which also highlights the AU’s opposition to instability and disintegration. The Chairperson’s words make it abundantly evident to regional and global players that the African Union is committed to maintaining peace, unity, and stability throughout the continent.
