Former Brazilian President Bolsonaro had surgery to alleviate hiccups, according to his wife
Michelle Bolsonaro, Jair Bolsonaro’s wife, posted on social media that her husband had undergone “a phrenic nerve block procedure” on Saturday to address his ongoing problems.
Bolsonaro, 70, was admitted to the hospital last Wednesday for an uncomplicated hernia surgery the next day. Justice Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Court granted his defense attorneys permission to release him from prison, where he is currently serving a 27-year sentence for coup planning.
He supported his son Flavio’s 2026 presidential campaign in a statement released by the hospital.
Since being stabbed in September 2018 at a presidential campaign event in the Minas Gerais state town of Juiz de Fora, the former president has struggled with his health.
Following the incident, Bolsonaro had a number of abdominal surgery.
