Grammy Lifetime Honors to Be Given to Whitney Houston and Chaka Khan for Decades of Hits and Cultural Influence
The Grammys are honoring true superstars as the Recording Academy formally announces the winners of the 2026 Special Merit Award, which include the late Whitney Houston and Chaka Khan. In recognition of careers that accomplished more than just making hits, the two legends will be given Lifetime Achievement Awards. They influenced the style, norms, and direction of world music.
This year’s Special Merit Award winners are truly deserving of recognition,” stated Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy. “A remarkable group whose impact extends across generations, genres, and the core of contemporary music.” These awardees have all had a significant and enduring influence, and we are excited to celebrate their outstanding accomplishments.
Whitney Houston views the accolade as a continuation of her family’s illustrious history. Pop, R&B, gospel, and film are all still influenced by Houston, years after her cousin Dionne Warwick was given the same honor. Houston, a six-time Grammy winner with over 200 million songs sold worldwide, did more than just rule the charts. She changed the definition of vocal brilliance and made it possible for Black women to succeed without compromise on mainstream radio and international stages.
Chaka Khan’s recognition is both unquestionable and long deserved. Khan, referred to as the Queen of Funk globally, has transitioned freely between R&B, funk, pop, jazz, and gospel over the course of more than 50 years while remaining loyal to her vision and voice. Long before it became the norm in the industry, she contributed to the normalization of genre blending with her ten Grammy Awards and classic tracks from both her solo and Rufus collaborations.
Legendary Afro Latin guitarist Carlos Santana, Cher, and the late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti are all among the 2026 recipients. Collectively, this year’s class reads like a model for influence that continues to advance culture.
