Bolsonaro of Brazil was given a temporary prison release for surgery
The imprisoned former president Bolsonaro has been granted temporary freedom by the Brazilian Supreme Court so that he can have surgery on Christmas Day to repair a hernia.
The Supreme Court of Brazil has approved the temporary release of former president Jair Bolsonaro from prison so that he can have surgery on Christmas Day.
According to court records, Bolsonaro’s transfer from custody to a hospital for a hernia operation on December 25 was approved by Justice Alexandre de Moraes on Tuesday. After losing Brazil’s 2022 presidential race, the 70-year-old former leader is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence for organizing a coup.
Following his 2018 campaign, Bolsonaro was stabbed in the abdomen, which has resulted in ongoing health issues. He had intestinal surgery in April of this year, and by November, Justice Moraes had mandated that he receive 24-hour medical attention while in detention.
Authorities have revoked the former president’s house detention and placed him in a federal police cell in Brasília after concluding that he posed a flight risk. Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, his son, posted a video on social media on Wednesday asking followers to offer up prayers for his father.
In September, Bolsonaro was found guilty of trying to reverse the results of the 2022 election, which saw President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, his left-wing opponent, defeat him. The decision concluded months of court cases that Justice Moraes presided over.
Throughout Brazil, the case has continued to incite political unrest. In large cities earlier this month, tens of thousands of Bolsonaro supporters demonstrated against legislation that would drastically shorten his prison sentence. According to legal experts, the law, which was approved by Congress last week, might reduce his sentence to fewer than three years.
President Lula has pledged to veto the bill if it hits his desk, but he conceded that the Congress, which is predominately conservative in Brazil, could overrule his choice.
Closely followed have been responses from around the world. The bill’s passage was praised by US President Donald Trump, who has called the Bolsonaro inquiry a “witch hunt.” Additionally, the sanctions placed on Justice Moraes earlier this year were withdrawn by the US.
As legal and political disputes about Bolsonaro’s future continue, it is anticipated that he will be placed back under arrest after his surgery.
