Oliseh supports Wilfred Ndidi as the rightful heir to the Super Eagles captaincy

Sunday Ugochukwu Oliseh, a former Nigerian international and former head coach of the Super Eagles, has endorsed Wilfred Ndidi as the best person to take over as national team captain soon.

Discussions about who should coach the Super Eagles’ next generation have heated up as longtime captain Ahmed Musa is essentially no longer in the team, even though he hasn’t declared his retirement. Current captain William Troost-Ekong is also anticipated to leave after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The 1994 AFCON champion complimented Ndidi’s impact, dependability, and the respect his teammates have for him in an interview with the Oliseh Insight Podcast.

“I don’t think anyone questions the players’ regard for Ndidi right now. Oliseh added, “He’s a player who participates in every game.”

“I’m not attempting to influence the selection of the captain, but since Ndidi captained the previous game, I believe he is already the captain.”

Ndidi has been an important member of the Super Eagles midfield for almost ten years. He presently plays for Turkish powerhouse Besiktas.

The 28-year-old has developed into one of the team’s most dependable leaders and is well-known for his professionalism, discipline, and poise both on and off the field.

As the national team gets ready for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco and other significant international events, his possible promotion to captain would mark the start of a new era.

Oliseh’s support bolsters the argument for Ndidi to assume the armband, ushering in what many see as a more solid leadership era for the Super Eagles, as the team undergoes a slow transition and some senior players are nearing the conclusion of their international careers.
