AFCON 2025: FIFA confirms that players will be released on December 15

FIFA has confirmed that clubs will only need to release players for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) starting on December 15, a full week later than the typical international release window. This will provide new logistical issues for African national teams.

The news was made on Wednesday in advance of the tournament, which will take place in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.

Participating teams will have less than seven days to put together their whole rosters, evaluate player fitness, and finalize tactical preparations prior to the start of Africa’s largest international football competition because of the late publication.

FIFA clarified that the move is similar to the strategy employed for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where teams kept players until just before the competition began.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) and other football stakeholders were consulted before the abbreviated release time was decided upon, according to the governing body, with the goal of lessening “the impact on various parties.”

FIFA did not elaborate on the specifics of these effects, though.

Before releasing their African players, European clubs competing in the continental competition will have more flexibility because to the updated schedule, which very roughly matches the 2025 UEFA Champions League window, which ends on December 10.

FIFA has urged national federations and clubs participating in continental events during the release period to hold bilateral talks and, if needed, develop “appropriate individual solutions” in order to handle the hectic schedule and potential fixture conflicts.

The world football organization says it will handle conflicts if they arise.

Given that many African countries rely significantly on players from Europe, some of whom are essential to their teams, the shortened preparation time is anticipated to put coaches’ flexibility to the test and push logistics teams to their breaking point.

The team choices, level of preparation, and general tournament preparedness may all be impacted by the delayed release.

Coaches and federations will now need to reconsider their preparation plans as the countdown to Morocco 2025 draws near, while supporters watch how teams will handle yet another unique AFCON build-up.
