RwandAir resumes its Mombasa service and starts flights to Zanzibar
RwandAir started flying to Zanzibar for the first time on December 1 and went back to flying to Mombasa, Kenya.
The national carrier said in a statement that the two routes are part of its plans to grow its business in East Africa.
A message on RwandAir’s X page said, “Today, we proudly launch our first-ever flight to Zanzibar and resume our service to Mombasa, opening the doors to two iconic coastal escapes in one historic moment.”
Yvonne Makolo, CEO of RwandAir, said there was a growing need for passenger and cargo planes in the area at the 2025 Aviation Africa Summit and Exhibition in Kigali in September.
She said that the airline was expecting about 1.2 million passengers this fiscal year, which ends in June 2026. This is more than the just over 1 million people who flew with the airline in 2023–2024.
RwandAir has 16 planes in its fleet right now, and it wants to have 21 by 2029. The two 737-800s that were just delivered are a step in the right direction. By the end of 2025, another plane—a wide-body Airbus A330-200—should arrive.
Rwanda’s Transport Sector Strategic Plan 2024–2029 says that RwandAir will fly to 29 places by 2028–29, up from 23 in 2023–24.
With the same long-term plan, the number of people should more than double, rising from just over 1 million in 2023–24 to 2.1 million in 2028–29.
