The Premier League has announced that there will be just one match on Boxing Day due to scheduling challenges
The Premier League has stated that there will be only one game on Boxing Day this season. This is different from the past, when there were always a lot of games around the holidays that fans enjoyed.
This year, there are only one Premier League games on Boxing Day, which is on a Friday. Manchester United hosts Newcastle United. This is the fewest games in 43 years.
In a statement, the League said that the main reason for the change was that more European club tournaments were putting more pressure on schedules.
“There are now several challenges to Premier League fixture scheduling rooted in the expansion of European club competitions – which led to a revision of our domestic calendar ahead of last season, including changes to the FA Cup,” it said.
The changes have made the Premier League a 33-weekend competition, which is less than in past years, even though it has always been a 380-match league.
Because of the television deals with the League, games have to be played on those weekends every season. Since there are only five rounds of games during the week, games have to be played on December 27 and 28.
“With fewer weekends available, fixture planning has become increasingly constrained,” the League noted. “With fewer weekends to work with, the League is bound by how the calendar falls.”
When Christmas Day comes on a Saturday next season, the League said there would be more games on that day.
Boxing Day football has been an important part of the English game for many years, with thousands of fans packing venues for big games.
This year’s smaller offering shows how calendars are getting more and more crowded as competitions in the US and Europe fight for room.
