Uganda’s coffee exports rise 59% in September thanks to a strong crop
Uganda’s agriculture ministry reported on Wednesday that the country’s September coffee exports increased 59% year over year due to a bountiful crop in some areas of the East African country.
Africa’s biggest coffee exporter delivered 844,949 60-kg bags of the beans in September, up from 532,212 bags exported at the same time last year, according to a report from the ministry.
Uganda gets the majority of its foreign exchange from gold and coffee. Coffee production is expected to increase by 15% in the crop year that began this month, according to the agriculture ministry.
“Coffee export volume was higher than the previous year on account of increased coffee production as the harvest in Central and Eastern regions is already underway,” according to the study.
The ministry reports that Uganda’s revenue from coffee exports in the 12 months ending in September was $2.2 billion, a 57% increase over the same period last year.
