Spotify Declares the Global Afrobeats Takeover with the Release of the Global Afrobeats Playlist

Spotify has announced the release of its new worldwide Afrobeats Playlist in an effort to further solidify Afrobeats’ position as a worldwide force. The new Global Afrobeats Playlist honors a sound that has influenced dance, fashion, and culture worldwide, moving from the club to the charts and beyond. This playlist is fueled by the enthusiasm and impact of listeners all across the world, in direct response to the genre’s global expansion.

Outside of Africa, Afrobeats is booming in Asia, with Thailand, Indonesia, India, and the Philippines emerging as important hotspots. These markets saw notable expansion in 2020: Thailand saw 1,370% growth, India saw 1,650%, the Philippines saw 1,492%, and Indonesia saw 4,530%. In 2025, the genre’s popularity in Latin America increased by an astounding 183% year over year, highlighting its widespread and global appeal.

It’s interesting to note that between 2020 and 2025, the number of user-generated playlists including “Afrobeats” increased by 135%, according to Spotify data. One playlist at a time, this movement of fans serving as tastemakers is expanding the genre’s reach throughout the world. Listeners curate, share, and export the sound globally in addition to simply enjoying it.

A new generation is responsible for this digital takeover. Playlists are Gen Z’s preferred method of discovery since they have a voracious thirst for new music. They have created global gateways out of playlists like Gbedu, African Heat, and Hot Hits Naija. These three playlists, which represent the varied energy of the genre from club songs to seamless crossovers, are the top three choices for young Afrobeats fans worldwide. Just Hot Hits Naija has had over 20 million plays worldwide.

The raw, street-driven pulse of Nigerian youth culture is captured by the top three playlists influencing Gen Z listening in the birthplace of the genre: Hot Hits Naija, Gbedu, and Street Energy. For example, the Afro Adura playlist’s average monthly plays increased by 51%, demonstrating the genre’s widespread and profound appeal.

“With the release of our Global Afrobeats Playlist, we are following the fans rather than taking the lead,” explains Benewaah Boateng, Senior Music Editor for Spotify in Sub-Saharan Africa. “This playlist is our way of honoring the momentum of listener-driven curation, as evidenced by the data. We are excited to offer a definite home for this dynamic and constantly changing genre, and we are only giving the voices of a new generation the credit they deserve for making Afrobeats a global force.

The new Afrobeats Global playlist honors the fans who started this movement from the beginning and gives the genre permission to continue growing.
