The late leader of Zimbabwe’s son, Robert Mugabe Jr., was taken into custody in Harare on suspicion of possessing cocaine and cannabis.

The 33-year-old son of the late former president of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe Jr., was taken into custody in Harare on suspicion of drug possession. Zimbabwean news site ZimLive reports that he was arrested by police on Wednesday after they allegedly discovered cocaine and cannabis in his possession. On drug-related accusations, he will appear before a magistrate at the Harare Magistrates Court.

Mugabe Jr. has already encountered legal issues. After a fight at a party in 2023, he was arrested on charges of assaulting a police officer and causing property damage. Prosecutors at the time claimed that he had spit on an officer and broken car windscreens, causing damages estimated at about $12,000. He requested an out-of-court settlement with the accuser, who was referred to as a friend, and disputed the claims.

The late Robert Mugabe and his widow, Grace, had a second kid, Mugabe Jr. In Zimbabwe, where his father governed for almost 40 years before being overthrown in 2017, his high-profile run-ins with the law have garnered a lot of public attention.

A key player in Zimbabwe’s liberation war, the late Robert Mugabe passed away in 2019 at the age of 95. However, he eventually came under international censure for alleged violations of human rights and policies that destabilized the nation’s economy, according to detractors.

At a time when Zimbabwean authorities have been stepping up their crackdowns on drug use in urban areas, the younger Mugabe appeared in court on the drug-related accusations.
