A school collapse in Indonesia claims three lives and traps dozens more

Three people were killed in a school collapse in East Java, Indonesia, and rescuers are frantically trying to find the 38 individuals who are still missing.

According to officials on Tuesday, Indonesian rescuers are working quickly to find 38 individuals who are thought to be buried beneath the debris of an Islamic boarding school that collapsed during afternoon prayers in East Java, killing three and injuring dozens more.

The Al Khoziny boarding school in Sidoarjo, which is roughly 780 kilometers east of Jakarta, was the scene of the tragedy on Monday. Three verified deaths and 99 survivors were reported by Mohammad Syafii, the head of Indonesia’s search and rescue organization. Almost 80 injured people have been sent to hospitals.

To move the debris, rescuers used a crane and an excavator, but authorities are being cautious. Heavy equipment would not be utilized in some sections because of concerns that the shaky structure would fall further, according to Nanang Sigit, a local search and rescue officer.

In footage that KompasTV aired, families of students gathered outside, anxiously looking at a chalkboard that listed the names of survivors.

According to preliminary studies, the accident was primarily caused by structural flaws. The building, which was already under construction, abruptly fell during prayers, bringing rubble cascading down on workers and students, according to Abdul Muhari, spokesman for the national disaster mitigation agency.

According to the agency, the building’s foundations were apparently not strong enough to sustain the addition of a fourth level.

This worry was mirrored by Al Khoziny caretaker Abdus Salam Mujib, who told official news agency Antara that although construction had been finished prior to prayers, the foundations were unable to support the extra weight.
