2026 World Cup Qualification: FIFA Deducts Three Points From South Africa for Using an Ineligible Player
FIFA sanctions caused South Africa to fall from the top spot in Group C to second place, increasing the chances of qualification for Benin, Nigeria, and Rwanda.
After the Disciplinary Committee of World Football’s governing body sanctioned the team for fielding an ineligible player, South Africa’s hopes of making it to the 2026 FIFA World Cup were severely damaged.
On March 21, Teboho Mokoena, a midfielder, participated in South Africa’s 2-0 victory over Lesotho in Polokwane, even though he was scheduled to serve a ban following two yellow cards. FIFA decided that the appearance violated FIFA World Cup 2026 Preliminary Competition Regulations Article 14 and FIFA Disciplinary Code Article 19.
Lesotho won the game 3-0, and South Africa was punished by forfeiting the game. The South African Football Association (SAFA) has also been hit with a formal warning and a punishment of 10,000 Swiss francs ($12,500, £9,340).
According to FIFA’s ruling, “the South African representative team must forfeit the match in question, resulting in a default score of 3–0.” It also confirmed that parties had 10 days to challenge the decision before the FIFA Appeal Committee.
South Africa loses three vital points as a result of the suspension, falling from first place in Group C to second place on goal differential behind Benin. Qualification for the 2026 finals in the US, Mexico, and Canada is only assured for the group winners.
With South Africa and Benin leading by three points and Nigeria and Rwanda trailing by three points, the decision has completely upended Group C. South Africa will visit Zimbabwe before hosting Rwanda in their final matches, while Benin will play Rwanda and Nigeria in the final two rounds of qualifying between October 10 and 14.
Because of the decision, the group’s dynamics have drastically changed, and every game that is left now has more importance for Africa’s World Cup aspirants.
