Sabalenka won back-to-back US Open titles and was crowned queen of queens
Aryna Sabalenka won back-to-back US Open titles with an incredible triumph, earning her the title of queen of queens.
After overcoming American eighth seed Amanda Anisimova 6-3 7-6(3) in an exciting women’s final on Saturday, world number one Aryna Sabalenka maintained her US Open title and solidified her place as the contemporary hardcourt queen.
The Belarusian won her fourth major championship and became the first woman to win back-to-back US Opens since Serena Williams, who won three in a row from 2012 to 2014. She hasn’t missed a hardcourt Grand Slam final since 2022.
The match between two of the best players in tennis came down to unforced errors, with Anisimova scoring 29 and Sabalenka only making 15. With an unreturnable serve to seal the win, she sank to her knees in joy and then embraced her coaches in the stands.
With excitement, Sabalenka remarked, “I want to thank everyone who came here, who flew in to be there in my box.” “No matter where you are in the world, I want you in my box because I’m going to make it to a lot more finals.”
The loss was yet another devastating moment for Anisimova, who was competing in just her second major final. Despite the support of the partisan Arthur Ashe Stadium audience, the 24-year-old New Jersey native found it difficult to maintain her momentum.
In reference to her 6-0 6-0 Wimbledon final defeat two months prior, an emotional Anisimova remarked, “It’s been a great summer, losing in two finals in a row is great but it’s also super hard.” “I didn’t put up enough of a fight today for my dreams.”
