SOAS Honors Somali Novelist Nuruddin Farah in London

The SOAS University of London has granted Somali author Nuruddin Farah, one of Africa’s most renowned writers, an honorary doctorate in appreciation of his decades-long literary and cultural contributions.

Frequently referred to be the founder of Somali literature, Farah has established a global reputation for his books that address issues of political unrest, exile, and identity. Maps, Secrets, and North of Dawn are only a few of his works that have been translated into many languages and are still essential reading for postcolonial and African literary studies at prestigious universities.

Throughout the Somali diaspora, the award was hailed as a significant achievement for African writing. It is a great time for Somalis worldwide and for everyone who appreciates culture and innovation, said Abdirashid Duale, Group CEO of Dahabshiil, one of Africa’s biggest financial services firms. We now have a voice on the global scene thanks to Nuruddin Farah. Dahabshiil is steadfast in its commitment to promoting creativity, education, and culture around the globe.

The acknowledgment coincides with Somali culture becoming more well-known overseas, despite the nation’s protracted war and turmoil. Many people view Farah’s international prominence as a symbol of Somali identity’s tenacity and its contribution to global culture.

Over 150 countries are served by Dahabshiil, which has a long history of supporting cultural and educational endeavors, from schools and scholarships to assistance for artists, singers, and writers. By endorsing Farah’s honor, it draws attention to the expanding convergence of diaspora identity, culture, and business in the Horn of Africa.

Farah’s doctorate from SOAS is being celebrated as a seminal achievement for Somali literature in the larger African literary canon, in addition to acknowledging the accomplishment of a single writer.

Novels, essays, and plays by Somali author Nuruddin Farah examine issues of political unrest, migration, family, and identity. His well-known books include Maps, Secrets, Links, and North of Dawn. One of Africa’s most prominent literary voices, Farah has won multiple international honors, including the Neustadt International Prize for Literature.
