Putin claims that Russia has no objections to Ukraine joining the EU

Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, stated on Tuesday that Moscow had never opposed Ukraine’s eventual EU membership and that he believed that both Russia and Ukraine could agree on a security solution.

Following his meeting with Putin in Alaska last month, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he believes Putin is “tired” of the bloodshed in Ukraine, but that it is still unclear whether peace can be achieved to put an end to Europe’s bloodiest conflict since World War Two.

Putin may attack Europe and the NATO military alliance, which is commanded by the United States, if Russia wins the conflict in Ukraine, according to Ukraine and Western European leaders who have stated that they do not think Putin is serious about bringing about peace in Ukraine.

Speaking in China, Putin reacted to those accusations with some of his most dovish statements since the Alaska summit, calling them “horror stories” and “hysteria” stoked by inept individuals who wanted to portray Russia as an adversary.

Putin claimed that the West’s attempt to engulf the entire post-Soviet space with NATO’s assistance had compelled Russia to take action in Ukraine.

At negotiations in China, Putin informed Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, “As for Ukraine’s membership in the EU, we have never objected to this.” “This is a different matter about NATO… We are quite aware of our stance here: we find this intolerable.

One of the most difficult aspects of any prospective peace agreement, according to diplomats and officials participating in talks, is a possible security guarantee for Ukraine, supported by the United States and Western European nations.

While NATO asserts that Russia cannot have a veto on membership in the alliance, which was established in 1949 to oppose the Soviet Union’s threat, Ukraine maintains that it is not for Russia to decide what Kyiv may or cannot join.

Putin claimed to have spoken with Trump on Ukraine’s security during their summit on August 15.

“There are options for ensuring Ukraine’s security in the event of an end to the conflict,” Putin stated. “And it seems to me that there is an opportunity to find consensus here.”

Putin stated that Russia was prepared to work with the United States at the largest nuclear power facility in Europe, Zaporizhzhia. Shortly after its invasion of Ukraine, in March 2022, Russia seized control of it.

Putin stated, “We can cooperate with American partners at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant,” adding that he was even willing to work with Ukraine at the facility and that the matter had been discussed informally with Washington.
